Who We Are
Beach Cities Health District is one of the leading preventive health agencies in the nation, and has served the communities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach since 1955. We offer a range of evidence-based health and wellness programs, with innovative services and facilities to promote health and well-being across the lifespan.

State of the Current Campus
Our 11-acre campus is home to our 63-year old former hospital building located at 514 North Prospect Avenue in Redondo Beach—extending from Diamond Street to Beryl Street and Prospect Avenue to Flagler Lane. The campus also includes two medical office buildings (510 and 520 North Prospect Avenue).

The next 1-5 years is our “window of opportunity” to address escalating maintenance costs as well as seismic and structural issues common with buildings of its age. BCHD’s Board and the project’s Community Working Group directed staff to take a broader look at the campus and prioritize safety after seismic experts provided analysis, preliminary costs and results that concluded that while no legal obligation exists to address the building’s structural integrity, there were issues that should be addressed.

Community Outreach
A robust public outreach process has been ongoing since 2017, with neighbors, residents, and community leaders providing their perspectives about the project. These valued insights – as well as information gathered from expert structural and financial consultants – form the foundation for moving forward.

Healthy Living Campus Vision
In pursuit of meeting the evolving health needs of residents, creating a community campus designed for all Beach Cities residents and dedicating more than a year to a community-driven process emerged a master plan to create an innovative Healthy Living Campus.

This once-in-a-generation project is our community’s unique opportunity to chart the future of preventive health in the Beach Cities by purposefully building an intergenerational, vibrant campus where people can engage in healthy behaviors, form meaningful connections and be well … for many generations to come.

Purpose of the Community Working Group

BCHD has convened a Community Working Group (CWG) to function as a community guidepost and sounding board as we work with professional planners and engineers to navigate our future and holistically enhance our Healthy Living Campus. The CWG is comprised of invited stakeholders and leaders representing various aspects of the Beach Cities including, but not limited to, businesses, environmental advocates, civic organizations, neighboring residents, senior services, and public health. The group is designed to be small, with the intent of engaging in constructive collaboration related to the Healthy Living Campus planning process and assisting in distributing information to the community as the process progresses.

The Working Group is a voluntary group of community members representing local interests that serves as a resource to BCHD staff and the board of directors.  While the CWG is not a formal voting body, it is designed to deepen community input into the campus planning and design process. The CWG is, and will continue to be, a valuable resource to BCHD throughout the process as we seek feedback, discussion and recommendations.
